Bacterial vaginitis in an infection located in the vaginal region. It stems from an imbalance of healthy and harmful bacteria in the vagina. The optimal environment for the vagina is one that has mostly healthy bacteria and only a minor amount of harmful bacteria. One of the types of healthy bacteria that decrease a woman's risk of attaining bacterial vaginitis includes the common Lactobacillus bacteria. There are several bacteria that pose a threat to a woman's vagina health. Some common ones that increase the risk of bacterial vaginitis include: Bacteroides, Mycoplasma hominis, Gardnerella vaginalis, and Mobiluncus.
Some possible causes behind an increase of harmful bacteria leading to bacterial vaginitis include irritants, medications, and organisms. Irritants may come in the form of sprays containing chemicals, clothing containing chemicals, or from organisms passed from a partner while engaging in sexual activity. Medications that promote the development of bacterial vaginitis include antibiotic drugs, hormone based medications, contraceptives, and douches. Organisms that increase a woman's risk of getting bacterial vaginitis include viruses and, of course, the harmful types of bacteria mentioned earlier.
Bacterial vaginitis should be properly diagnosed by a medical professional through a pelvic exam. A simple swap of vaginal fluid can determine what kind of infection a woman has. It is interesting to note how a recent study found that 70% of women will choose to treat their vaginal symptoms without assistance from their doctor. This study, from the American Social Health Association, revealed a scary finding from that statistic: women who tried to take matters into their own hands and treat their vaginal infection by themselves often made the wrong self diagnosis. They usually thought that their bacterial vaginitis symptoms signaled a yeast infection. Making the wrong diagnosis can end up causing unnecessary complications in the sufferer's bacterial vaginitis.
